Supply Chain, Looming Strike…Shakey Economy. Nice way to start a morning, eh?

It certainly has caused me to take pause. Now I’m not an international logistics crackerjack by any means. LDD works hard on our Made in America mission of offering our clients more products made by American craftsman whenever possible. Yet over the last few days I’ve started seeing these news headlines filling my feed each morning and well, I started thinking – and we all know that can be dangerous!

I fully realize we can’t become isolationists; we need some sort of global trade. Yet the supply chain issues of 2020-2021 are far too recent in my memory. Our Made in America Mission started as a way for LDD to celebrate American talent, now more than ever it is so much more than that.

Why buy American?

  • Reduced Dependency on Imports: In light of the recent news, this is a no-brainer! Let’s start supporting local manufacturing, as this will lessen our addiction to foreign goods which is easily disrupted by strikes and global logistics issues.

  • Environmental Impact: Global warming is another headline that fills my feed each morning.  Our need for instant gratification is another reason to buy American. We are all guilty of this one - “I’ll grab it off Amazon. It’ll be here tomorrow and it’s $3.00 cheaper.”  What if we took a pause and thought through our purchases. You can bet your bottom dollar that many of these items came to our shores on a ship, produced in a factory with little to no EPA regulations, sporting a huge carbon footprint.

  • Economic Strength: We are stronger together. When you purchase products Made in America you are supporting local jobs and cultivating our own economic resilience during global supply chain upsets. Spoiler alert…it’s happening again.

  • Better Standards for Manufacturers’ Employees:  US manufacturers must adhere to strike labor laws that include fair wages and safe working conditions. You can confidently know the people making your product are not young children or people working in deplorable conditions.

Pretty good arguments to support American made products, wouldn’t you say? I’ll be watching the news carefully in the upcoming days. Although, I also have some sense of peace knowing many of my clients’ products will not be stuck in a port only weeks before the holidays.  Who will you be buying from?
